The pieces we reach for most deserve a little attention at the end of the day. Jewelry care does not need to be an elaborate ritual. Start with knowing what your piece is made from, then give it a place of its own.
Put jewelry on last
Let lotions and perfume dry before adding necklaces, earrings or rings. Take your jewelry off before swimming, showering, exercising or using household cleaners. A small dish in a dry, secure spot makes this habit easier to keep.
Keep cleaning gentle
For a routine wipe, use a clean, soft cloth without rubbing hard. A cloth made for polishing bare silver may be too abrasive for a plated surface, so check the care instructions for your particular finish. Avoid toothpaste, scouring powders and improvised cleaning mixtures.
Stones, settings and finishes can need different treatment. Do not assume that soaking or an ultrasonic cleaner is suitable for every piece. If you cannot identify the material or notice a loose setting, ask a jeweler before cleaning it.
A little space goes a long way
Store pieces separately in a lined compartment or soft pouch to reduce rubbing and tangling. Fasten necklaces before laying them down, and keep jewelry away from damp bathrooms and direct heat. Pack pieces individually when you travel.
Check the details
Every so often, look at clasps, earring backs and stone settings. If a clasp feels weak or a stone moves, stop wearing the piece until it has been checked. Gentle habits help; a repair is still the right answer when something is loose.
Keep the original material description and care notes with your jewelry. They are the most useful starting point for looking after the pieces you want to keep.
